At university I completed a photography collection which focused on being & identity. It was accompanied by a book I wrote, which described the way photography has the ability to capture identity, presence, and the notion of now. In it, I wrote that it is impossible to truly represent the here & now visually; however, I noted that photography forces us to stay in the present moment because “as soon as the shutter has clicked, that moment has ended” and we must be ready to move on to the next.
In all things, it is important to be present. It is important to fully embrace your status quo, to accept all that is in this moment, and to not dwell on it in the next moment. It is important to be open to your reality, because it is whether you want it to be or not. Practice presence in your next photography session. Pick up a camera and learn what it means to embrace a moment in its entirety - capture it honestly - and move on from it immediately. Allow yourself to flow and flux in the moment that you are given. Learn what it means to be.
“It is not irritating to be where one is. It is only irritating to think one would like to be somewhere else.” - John Cage
